BSL and owner responsibility
By Shadrach on Mar 13, 2008 in Pet Laws, Rescue & Welfare
Well here we are once again talking about one of my least favorite topics: Breed Specific Legislation, sigh. Before I share the latest news, I want to refer you to couple of great sites and also a radio show where you can keep current on all the dog legislation happening worldwide - even so-called animal charities want to turn away dogs based on breed, grrrrrr.
To take action go to:
Paws 4 Laws
Rott N Chatter - the oldest BSL site in the world
Dog Politics
My Dog Votes
And listen to the online radio show:
Dog Legislation with our friend, Jan Cooper
And now here is some news:
Major British Animal Charity in Breed Specific Legislation Controversy
Don’t blame the breed but use a leash
Pet owner groups protest breed ban
Ontario laws turn la belle province into dog pound of last resort
OH: Whitehall City Council To Hear Testimony On A Pit Bull Ban
Group Protests Madisonville, TX Breed Specific Law
Ft. Myers, FL: Humane society barking over possible dog ban
KY: Auburn ready to enforce dog laws; BSL against Rottweilers, Dobermans, Pitbulls and Chows
Vote: Should cities be allowed to ban certain dog breeds?
FL proposal to allow dangerous-dog ban stirs debate
And in the case of mistaken identity - something that no ordinary shelter worker is really qualified to determine yet in typical gestapo fashion one dog had to live out TEN months in a shelter because of this very thing:
Dog dodges death row
Forcing mandatory spay/neuter on pitbulls equals breed genocide:
Law would target pit bulls: Pasadena looks into mandatory sterilization
It appears PeTA wants them ALL dead rather than rehabbed. Are we surprised? They want the end of ALL pet ownership and domestication and MSN and BSL is a part of their agenda:
Michael Vick Case Causes Rift in Animal Rights Advocates
This could’ve been ANYONE’s dog. And did you know that ten years ago it was St. Bernards on the “bad dog” list. Before that it was Dobermans and German Shepards. Did you know there are far more cases of Labradors biting and attacking than so-called “pitbulls” BUT far too many humans are now hating a breed they only know by media hype. One politician told us he didn’t want any more kids mauled in the streets. Well ANY dog can do that. And it is human responsibility to teach children the nature of dogs and how to interact and behave around them. AND it is OWNER responsibility. Dogs are PREDATOR CARNIVORES! Would you let your children go play out in the woods with wild wolves and coyotes???? RUH??? Well would you?
Owning a dog is a privilege that needs to be earned. KNOW the nature of a dog before bringing one home. And one more thing - laws will never, ever determine responsibility for anyone. You are either responsible or you’re not. Hold the owners accountable not the dogs. Otherwise you maybe ought to change the laws on drunk driving and hold certain vehicles responsible instead of the humans behind the wheel bepaws that is exactly what BSL is doing. Maybe all Ferraris should be banned since they’re so fast and could hurt someone. Or maybe you’d better hold ALL Corvettes responsible because they can go too fast and hurt someone. As goofy as the politicians we’re putting in office. By the way, I VOTE, WOOF!
Have a pawsitively tail waggin; BSL-free day, WOOF!

I agree completely with Shadrach. People, (owners) need to take responsibility for their pets. After all, an animal operates on instinct, not reason! They are incapable of determining situations. They have reflexive actions. Their owners need to be responsible. They are the decision making part of the partnership. Supposedly, they are the ones with the brains and need to exercise control over their pets.
