Promeris Flea & Tick “protection”…or is it?

Promeris Flea & Tick

I’m just RRREALLY glad my humans don’t use these pesticide poops on me, WOOF! If it kills the bugs, and it is ON us, guess what it can do to us over prolonged use ruh? Well, we hope you read this below AND the links I’m providing for natural flea protection. Laurryn sent us some information to help with a lot of the emails going around on the internet about this product. And don’t forget to join us LIVE on Animal Talk Naturally, June 10, 2008 at 2:30 PM Eastern as we talk with holistic veterinarian, Dr. Stephen Blake, about “Helping Pets Be Pest-Free, Naturally!” Oh and check out this article on the CDC Withdraws Study on Impacts of Chemical Pollution

News from Dogs Adverse Reactions:
Yes, there is new product out call Promeris manufactured by FD.

It contains two pesticides… amitraz and metaflumizone and was approved by EPA (not FDA) August 2007.

Regarding the email and postings going around, the manufacturer posted a press release which can be found http://www.promeris.com/ProMeris_com_Response.pdf and Snopes has it with status “undetermined”.

The PetPlace has info on it and states:
*Metaflumizone works by interfering with the nerve function of fleas, ultimately resulting in death.
*Amitraz kills ticks by disrupting their nervous system function that results in their inability to feed causing them to detach from the dog, become paralyzed and die.

Metaflumizone is supposed to be new, but amitraz is also manufactured under “mitaban liquid concentrate” for dogs, for mites (such as demodectic). Mitaban has been around for a while, sponsored by Pharmacia & Upjohn yet manufactured by Pfizer. It is also used in a tick preventative collar.

The FDA/CVM Cumulative report will not include this product since it was approved by EPA. They don’t have the chemical ‘metaflumizone’ listed at all, but ‘amitraz’ is listed with 164 dogs evaluated and the second most common sign is ‘death’.
