Nationwide Mars Pet Food Recall

Nationwide Mars Pet Food Recall

Well isn’t this special??? ANOTHER pet food recall hmmm, and for what? Salmonella AGAIN? And, HEHE, the detractors of REAL, raw meaty bones for us dogs and cats, say they don’t want to feed us raw food bepaws of salmonella??? Uh HELLO, you and your pets can get it from WAY overcooked, commercial pet food! So possibly going back to nature is the REAL way to go? I’m glad my humans feed me a raw diet and not this poop, WOOF!

The news:
Franklin, Tennessee (September 12, 2008)-Today, Mars Petcare US announced a voluntary recall of products manufactured at its Everson, Pennsylvania facility. The pet food is being voluntarily recalled because of potential contamination with Salmonella serotype Schwarzengrund. This voluntary recall only affects the United States.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. Healthy people potentially infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. On rare occasions, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

We have been using Pedigree for years but last the last few months our dogs have been getting diarrhea & have been all but refusing to eat Pedigree dry or wet products. Then the worst happened last Wednesday…after feeding our three year old Aussie….he began drinking more water than usual…then he had 2 seizures in a row immediately after ingesting his Pedigree food. He was a perfectly healthy dog until now.

We have taken him to the doctor…he has run blood test & advised us that the seizures were not system or metabolic based…our vet has suggested it could be low levels of toxins…he has now advised us not to feed our dogs Pedigree any longer

We were also informed this morning that some of the pet stores have been recalling Pedigree products….one being Pet’s Mart….where we were buying Pedigree….but Pedigree website (Pedigree.com) as of tonight doesn’t mention that recall at all…but Pet’s Marts website does

This scares us….the silence scares us….after years of using Pedigree, we will no longer continue to buy this product

We are interested in doing something about the way dog food is made & sold…it’s a same that our loving pets are being perpretrated by these companies.

What can we do…how can we get involved?

    Hi Fran,

I’m glad you found our blog because it has the answers to your questions. Feeding a dog ANY kind of kibble is not a natural diet for them. Feeding a raw meaty bone diet is the diet to feed a carnivore – which is what a dog is. A dog is an opportunistic scavenger carnivore.

So rather than fight the pet food industry, why not just switch your dogs to a natural diet? If every pet owner did that, the pet food industry wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. But at any rate, not everyone will do that. I do invite you to consider that as the best possible option for the health and longevity for your dogs.

Here are some articles to read and shows to listen to that can help you on your journey.

OMG our dog Darrell Died 09/21/08 from the Pedigree.
He started spitting up the pedigree sometime in early Aug we brought him the the vets on Aug 27 and the told us he was getting old. He had issues with his heart, fluid in his lungs and an infection in this blood stream. The vets put him on meds for his heart along with meds for the fluid in his lungs. On Sept 10 we brought him back to the vets cause he was only getting worse. Once again we were told he was getting Old. On 09/21/08 he pasted away, and on 09/25/08 we recieved the recall letter from BJ whole sale club.

Interesting that they didn’t mention Nutro Natural Choice (made by Mars) because that is also one of their dog foods that dogs have actually died from eating. Mine was one. Anyway, read for yourself. I can’t post a link here, but, do a quick google search for “Nutro Natural Choice Sick” and you’ll see the Consumer Affairs website has an article about “String of Illnesses Afflicts Nutro-fed Pets”.
My suspicion is that Mars didn’t mention Nutro Natural Choice so that it would be more difficult to draw the connection both on search engines and in real life. They are saying that their actions are due to suspected salmonella and that no animals were harmed. This is corporate crisis control at it’s best. Plenty of animals have been sick and some have died.

I just wanted to say that we purchased a 6 week old puppy and have only had him a week and he died this morning! I was not feeding him the Pedigree, but the breeder I bought him from was =(… I had no idea and had not even heard about the recall until today. I think other people should be aware of this because the vet didn’t realize this is what it was and with him being only 4lbs I’m not sure that he would have made it anyways but there is the thought that maybe had we expected this it could have been treated properly. My puppy was throwing up the canned food I was feeding him and had diaherrea, he wouldn’t eat anything besides the canned food but once he threw it up the first time he didn’t want nothing to do with it so he quit eating all together. Also at the vet his temperature was only 96 degrees F, and from what they said that is 4 degress less than what it should be, he just continued to decline. He was a pretty restless puppy but I didn’t realize it was due to this, he spent all day yesterday sleeping and I had to wake him to try and give him food and to go outside. From my understanding the older or bigger dogs are able to flush it out of there system, but puppies unfortunately are not strong enough and the breeder said he knows 3 so far also did not make it. I just feel like everyone should know about this so they recognize this in pups and are aware of this when purchasing a puppy. And if you think this is what is the matter with your pup go straight to the vet, maybe I waited to long.

I BOUGHT PEDIGREE DOG FOOD AND WAS FEEDING MY 1O MONTH OLE CHOCOLATE LAB AND SHE RECENTLY HAS BEEN VERY SICK. AFTER 2 TRIPS TO THE VET AND SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS LATER, I FIND OUT THAT I AM POISONING HER WITH HER FOOD. SHE HAS HAD A FEVER OF 104 DEGREES AND BEEN VOMITING AND HAVING EXPLOSIVE DIAHERREA. MY VET WAS TREATING HER FOR A BACTERIA INFECTION. ALL THE SYMPTOMS OF SALMONELLA WAS THERE. I WOULD NOT HAVE FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS RECALL IF I DID’T SHOP AT A KROGERS AND IT PRINT OUT ON MY RECEIPT THAT THE DOG FOOD THAT I HAD PURCHASED WAS TAINTED. I WILL NEVER FEED MY DOG PEDIGREE OR ANY OTHER FOOD MADE BY MARS PETCaREEVER AGAIN.
