Natural first aid preparedness for dogs

thinkingboutthings2You’ve heard it before, “I’d rather be safe than sorry“, but often with us pets our humans are just not prepared for the inevitable emergency. I’m going to share with you with a few things we always keep on hand at our house so that no matter what emergency comes up, my humans are prepared for emergencies for me and for themselves, WOOF!

You’re going to want a first aid kit of some kind on hand. And rather than me trying to reinvent the wheel – besides that’s a job for humans hehe – I’ll just share with you an article my Mom wrote a while back on first aid care for pets, and also a first aid kit you can find out more about on our website. Okay first the article – be sure and read it all the way through, and make your own list and check it twice, WOOF! http://aspenbloompetcare.com/2007/08/first-aid-for-your-dog.htm

You know, we just heard about a dog that just won its full championship, was a year old but died of a bee sting. If you have a first aid kit with you, especially with some of the natural ingredients I’m going to share then possibly something this tragic can be avoided – not always because some animals just react and die right away but it never hurts to be prepared.

At any rate here is a natural first aid kit you can put together but remember we are ONLY talking about Young Living essential oils as far as essential oils go okay. If you choose to use others, cheaper junk, well then you can possibly do more harm than good. Use the good stuff to ensure your safety and that of your dogs, WOOF!

Article on first aid for dogs:

I Need Somebody!. This is a live teleconference with world-renowned, holistic vet Dr. Nancy Brandt, who shares easy and economical ways of keeping our pets healthy and providing first aid with essential oils Aromatherapy Pet Health & Essential Oils

In addition a few other items that are ALWAYS on hand in our home are:
*Activated charcoal bepaws that can draw out any poisons (you can find this in any health food store). Plus it’s great to make poultices with as well.

*Colloidal silver or ionic silver. It’s great for flushing out wounds, eyes, etc. as it naturally suffocates bacteria! Ionic and Colloidal silver appears to be a powerful, natural antibiotic and preventative against infections. Acting as a catalyst, it reportedly disables the enzyme that one-celled bacteria, viruses and fungi need for their oxygen metabolism. They suffocate without corresponding harm occurring to enzymes or parts of the body chemistry. The result is the destruction of disease-causing organisms in the body and in the food. Much better than antibiotics that kill everything indiscriminately! Did you know that colloidal silver really does kill bacteria and help wounds heal? aloe_vera*Aloe vera gel. That together with the lavender essential oil can really help with burns, stings, etc.

Some other essential oils you can have on hand to help – these are by Young Living Essential Oils which we use ALL the time in my house, WOOF:
*Purification blendis great for cuts, scrapes, minor insect bites. It can also help calm your dog or YOU!
*Thieves blend coupled with the ionic or colloidal silver, you have a natural solution in place of antibiotics. Thieves blend is known to be 99.6% effective against bacteria.
*Lavaderm spray is great for soothing and calming minor burns or any other types of pervasive skin irritations.
*Panaway blend, helichrysum, or Deep Relief Roll-On for soothing any discomfort.
*Di-Gize blend for stomach upsets that include diarrhea, travel sickness, or even constipation.
*V6 Massage Oil as a natural replacement for petroleum jelly when a lubricant is needed

Make sure to include sterile gloves, sterile dressings, adhesive bandages, eye wash solution (colloidal or ionic silver work great for this), thermometer, scissors, and tweezers.

I know there are other natural kits you can have on hand and we do keep some homeopathy on hand for those acute situations. You may want to contact a homeopath for what to have on hand specifically for those situations. We’ve done a show on that subject with Dr. Jill Elliot that can help you if you prefer to go the homeopathic route, WOOF! Here is the link to that audio: Homeopathic Health for Happy Animals. Typically most homeopaths will reach for Apis 30C for stings and bites – to only be used in this fashion in acute, emergency situations. Otherwise seek out a classical homeopath to help you with chronic issues.

You can also purchase the book, Pet E.R. Guide, especially if you travel with your pets so that you’ll have a list of vets in the area you are traveling that offer emergency care outside of regular office hours, WOOF! You can also listen to our interview with the author of this book, Melinda Lord, here: Pet Emergency Preparedness. And you can also get prepared by taking a class in first aid & CPR for pets through Pet Tech. You can listen to the interview we had with Thom Somes, the Pet Safety Guy here:First Aid Care for Pets
