Fleas, ticks, mosquitoes AND pesticides
By Shadrach on Jul 2, 2009 in Natural Dog & Cat Health, Natural Yard & Home for Dogs, Preventing Pests -Fleas, ticks, mites
I’m forever relieved that my humans don’t use these pesticides on me, WOOF! I’m very glad I get a truly holistic approach to my care but don’t buy into the buzzword of “holistic” – look it up in your dictionary so you know what it means, truly means. And then apply that knowledge. I have a LOT of information to help you get your minds wrapped around the fact that these so-called “preventatives” are nothing short of poison humans. And you should know that poison is good for one thing: killing. I’m reaching out to you on behalf of canines everywhere…
In his latest newsletter, June 2009, veterinarian Dr. Stephen Blake has some strong words to say about using these pesticides on us pets:
The threat sounds so pretty when the ad playing on your television is surrounded by peaceful music to help drown out the warnings about allergic reactions and, oh yeah, possible death. What is this threat? It’s right there in the topical flea and tick products that are being used on millions of animals every year. These chemicals are carcinogens and neurotoxins which are being absorbed into the skin of animals and people. We’re killing ourselves and our planet, all in the name of greed.
For a natural approach to fighting off fleas, ticks & mosquitoes Dr. Blake recommends the following essential oils for dogs:
Instead of potentially lethal chemicals, Dr. Blake suggests the following approaches to ward off fleas and mosquitoes: “I like to use an Essential Oil blend consisting of one drop each of Lemon, Lemongrass, and R.C. (A Young Living Essential Oils blend of four varieties of the Eucalyptus species,) Pine, Lavender, Cypress, Spruce, Myrtle, Marjoram and Peppermint in one ounce of spring water in a sprayer bottle. Spray this combination on dry dogs and cats each time they go outside or into an infested area. For ticks, Dr. Blake favors one drop each of Lavender, Lemon Grass, Sage and Thyme mixed into one ounce of spring water and sprayed onto pets every day during tick season. (NOTE: Dr. Blake and my human only use Young Living Essential Oils). OR for simplicity’s sake you can just grab a bottle of my human’s own Be Free aromatherapy spray for dogs. *The pesticide Atrazine is so toxic it is banned in Europe, but it is used so widely in the U.S., that it is found in 71% of the U.S. drinking water.
*Currently, over 400 pesticides can be legally used in the U.S. For example, apples can be sprayed up to 16 times with 36 different pesticides. None of these chemicals are present in organic foods.
*According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, organophosphate pesticides (OP) are now found in the blood of 95% of Americans tested, and the levels are twice as high in blood samples taken from children. Battling Fleas, Ticks, & Mosquitoes: Pet Health Care or Billion Dollar Pet Industry?
We all look forward to sharing some fun in the sun with our pets during the summer. However, this is also the time of year when many of us grow concerned over how to protect our pets from fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. The big pharmaceutical companies not only know this, but they actually motivate our fears so that we’ll use their products to “protect” our pets from such scary bugs as fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. They have us believing that lurking in every nook and cranny are all these nasty pests, just waiting to consume our pets with their infectious diseases. They would have us believe that unless we use their toxic chemicals in fancy packages – advertised using cute puppies and kittens – that our dogs and cats will be sitting ducks (so to speak) for all the fleas, ticks and mosquitoes in the neighborhood. They tell us this so often and in so many forms of media that many tend to believe this fear-mongering and surrender to the purchase and use of these toxic pesticides on their pets.
